     The Union Pacific and Central Pacifics joined at Promontory Point, Utah, on May 10, 1869.  To commemorate the achievements of the two companies, a golden tie was made to join the last two unjoined ties.  Even though the hammer went up and missed the spike completely, the cheers resounded marking the end of a heroic achievement in human labor.
